The Foundation
The Winchester Scholarship Foundation is a voluntary non-profit organization dedicated to providing need-based financial aid to students who have graduated from Winchester High School. The Scholarship Committee composed of five Winchester residents, awards scholarships based upon unmet family financial need. Since its establishment in 1945, the WSF has been supporting students during their four college years as well as students pursuing graduate degrees. Income from endowed gifts from organizations and individuals as well as annual contributions are the principal source of funding.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Winchester Scholarship Foundation (WSF), an organization that provides scholarships for Winchester High School graduates with the support of Winchester residents. Originally formed by the Winchester Mothers’ Association in 1945, the foundation began by awarding $150 scholarships to six recipients per year. In 2015 alone, 70 years after its formation, the foundation was able to donate a total sum of $378,950 to 120 new and former graduates of Winchester High School.
In the past 15 years, WSF has awarded 1,200 scholarships in excess of four million dollars to students who have graduated from Winchester High School. The foundation recognizes the widening gap between higher education costs and the ability of families to pay them and strives to provide assistance to those families.
In order to pay out that many scholarships, the WSF begins a mailing campaign after Thanksgiving. Through that they’ve established 46 endowed funds. They’re also about to receive their fourth donation from the Class of 1960. That class has also challenged other classes to donate, which spurred the Class of 1962 and the Class of 2010 to create a fund starting with $10,000.
Students of all kinds have received scholarships from the WSF. There’s no requirements and qualifications are need based. Students simply fill out an application each year. Though most go to four-year schools, scholarships are available to students who attend any accredited college or university.
